Jacqueline Melissen – Editor
In addition to being a writer, I am a trained and experienced editor. I have post-secondary education in both substantive and copy editing, and experience editing academic papers, journals, newspapers, and fiction.
I have recently added “blog posts” to my editing resume, which started with Juli and I deciding to edit each other’s work and branched out from there. I have discovered that this editing is my favourite kind of work. Bloggers are often amazing and interesting people who have a compelling story to tell, and I have been so honoured to help a few of them take their story and turn it into something that is wonderful to read. As an editor, it’s important for me to have a solid grasp of grammar and punctuation, obviously, but I also am capable of the substantial edits that can take a piece of writing from good to great.
One problem, of course, is that bloggers generally do not have a lot of disposable income to invest in an editor. They know that an editor can elevate their writing to a new level, but they simply can’t afford to invest very much into paying one. Therefore, I have really tried to keep my rates predictable and affordable. I suggest starting with one post that you really want to be your best (for an important submission, for example) and giving this a try.

“Jacqueline has helped me edit headlines, ebooks, and work out sentence structures for my content. She catches things I would never have noticed and has given me valuable feedback and encouragement. We pay for a lot of services online, and editing is often overlooked. The fact is that when I am writing out posts and content, I find that I start drowning in my words and lose perspective. Hiring an editor helps me polish and refine my work, and makes my message more clear and concise.”
– Shawna Scafe, Simple on Purpose and A Little Light
“Jacqueline edited a reflective blog post for me and I was very pleased with the results. She responded thoughtfully to the flow and theme, provided helpful suggestions around what material to emphasize and what I could omit, and edited grammatical errors — all within a timely manner. I would most definitely use her services again.”
– Louise Chapman, Talk Nerdy to Me
“I had the pleasure of having Jacqueline edit one of my favourite blog posts in preparation to submit it to a big name site. She was professional, fast and thorough. I asked her to cut down the word count by a third and the results were amazing. She managed to make the piece more succinct without losing my tone and voice. As a blogger herself, she understands that edits can be painful, but she was as kind and encouraging as she was honest and straightforward.”
